NZ policymakers unveil new national gambling harm prevention strategy

In a landmark initiative, the New Zealand government, led by Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey, has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at mitigating gambling-related harm. This strategy is not just a plan but a commitment, injecting an impressive NZ$81 million (approximately £36.1 million) into enhancing support, access, and intervention services for individuals and their families affected by problem gambling.

The Staggering Reality of Gambling Harm in New Zealand

The statistics paint a concerning picture: one in every five New Zealanders is at risk of experiencing gambling harm in their lifetime. This alarming figure underscores the critical need for a robust response to protect community well-being and ensure the sustainability of the nation’s gambling harm treatment infrastructure.

“With one in five at risk, our national strategy is not just a response but a proactive step towards safeguarding our community’s future,” states Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey.

Innovative Solutions: Clinical Internships and Inclusive Consultation

The strategy introduces several groundbreaking measures, including up to 18 new clinical internships aimed at addressing workforce shortages in the field of gambling harm treatment. These internships offer hands-on clinical experience, bridging the gap between academic study and practical application, thereby preparing interns to contribute effectively to the field.

Furthermore, the development of this strategy was grounded in a comprehensive two-stage consultation process, incorporating insights from individuals directly affected by gambling harm. This inclusive approach ensures that the strategy is rooted in real-world needs and experiences.

Funding the Fight Against Gambling Harm

      1. Problem Gambling Levy Regulations: A new framework that secures funding for treatment services through levies collected from the gambling industry, including casinos and gaming machine operators.
      2. Extension to Online Casino Operators: Ongoing discussions aim to include online casino operators in the levy framework, coinciding with New Zealand’s plans to launch an online casino market.

“Ensuring a sustainable funding model through the Problem Gambling Levy Regulations is crucial for the long-term success of our harm prevention strategy,” notes an industry analyst.

Looking Ahead: New Zealand’s Digital Gaming Future

As New Zealand prepares to expand its digital gaming landscape, the government’s commitment to preventing and treating gambling harm has never been more important. Through strategic investments in support services and innovative approaches like clinical internships, New Zealand is setting a precedent for how to protect its citizens in the evolving world of gambling.

Conclusion: A Call to Action for a Safer Tomorrow

The New Zealand government’s national gambling harm prevention strategy represents a significant step forward in the fight against gambling-related harm. By focusing on support, intervention, and sustainable funding, New Zealand is not only addressing the immediate needs of those affected but also laying the groundwork for a healthier, safer future for all its citizens.
